MIXED MEDIA

SENSORED, 2022
Canvas: 40" x 30"

ACRYLIC PAINT, EUROPEAN CRYSTALS

Keenly observing the world is a multisensory

experience, which is why this self-inspired multi-media self-portrait exaggerates my features. To convey my heightened perception, I alter my facial features’ scale and further illuminate them with rhinestones, directing the viewer’s focus. The geometric shapes unite both sides of my face, symbolizing my empathetic nature and openness to different perspectives.

In my Drawing Foundations class at RISD, the assignment was simple; create fifty drawings of your aluminum sculptures. I was instantly inspired to take this to the next level by using individual drawings on folded index cards that I systematically organized. Each row contains different perspectives of the same aluminum sculpture using alternating mediums. I was honored by the professor when he explained that in the history of the assignment, I was the only person ever to use actual aluminum foil

in each image. I accomplished this by cutting out the highlight of the sculpture with an Olfa knife and then inserting the foil. Taping twenty- five of the drawings to each side of a piece of newsprint emulated the aluminum’s ability to reflect light in multiple directions. Working with aluminum foil and its reflective qualities contributes to the idea of self-reflection. This project enabled me to take something vague, elevate it and let it shine. This was featured in the Woods-Gerry Gallery.

A visual representation of a short story I wrote through a gumball's perspective:

Listening to the blaring metallic bangs as each shopping cart entered the cart corral, I patiently waited for the customers to stroll by. Squished against the round glass of the gumball machine, my pink candied shell perfectly aligned with my fellow neighbors. I carried the immense weight of my colorful acquaintances who enjoyed the air filled top. The metal rod, awkwardly placed in the center of the gumball machine, created a sense of separation within this physically tight-knit community. Observing the cash register lines populating with customers, a little boy escaped from his mother’s arms. Holding a shiny coin, the middle aged child waddled over towards my home. I struggled to further examine him as the glass began to fog up from his warm breath. When I heard the quarter plunge into the coin receiving disk, I strongly wished for freedom. The ratchet gear screamed as the handle turned. Startled by the sudden drop, I fell into the dispenser disk which abruptly rotated to meet the entrance of the chute. Rolling down the spiraling clear staircase my vision consisted of blurry colors. When I approached the final corner my body crashed straight into the metal flap. Leaving some of my pink shell behind, the boy’s hands gripped onto my waxy coating. Tossed into the mouth, his tongue coated me in a thin layer of saliva. Large teeth cracked open my rubber core while my hard, candied exterior quickly dissolved. No longer a sphere, I performed many tricks like morphing into bubbles and stretching large distances. My elasticity stiffened and the jaws of the boy slowed down. Flying out of the child’s mouth I came in contact with the concrete floor. Aching in pain, the bottom of his shoe pressed right up against me and the vibrancy of my pink complexion blackened.
